Holistic PCOS Support in Clifton Hill
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex metabolic and hormonal condition, but it doesn't have to define your life. My approach to PCOS is deeply holistic; I look at the big picture, from your insulin sensitivity and cycle regularity to your skin health and stress levels. I’m passionate about helping those in Melbourne navigate their PCOS with clarity and confidence. If you’ve felt like your symptoms have been dismissed or that the only solution offered is hormonal birth control (which btw works WONDERS for some people, I am not here to judge, but rather work alongside), I’m here to offer a supportive, evidence-informed framework to help you understand your body better.
As an AHPRA-registered Melbourne acupuncturist with a focus on hormonal health, I provide compassionate care for those managing the diverse symptoms of PCOS. Whether you are trying to conceive, looking to regulate your periods, or simply want to manage the metabolic side of the condition, my Clifton Hill clinic offers a safe space to work toward internal balance and long-term wellbeing.
How Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Support PCOS:
Cycle Regulation: Supporting the body to encourage regular ovulation and more predictable periods.
Metabolic Support: Working alongside your diet and lifestyle to assist with insulin sensitivity and energy levels.
Symptom Management: Addressing the outward signs of androgen excess, such as hormonal acne and unwanted hair growth.
Fertility Priming: Tailored acupuncture protocols for those with PCOS who are trying to conceive naturally or through IVF.
Stress and Cortisol Balance: Lowering the stress load on the body, which is vital for hormonal harmony in PCOS.
Metabolism and Bloating: Providing a holistic framework to support your metabolism and digestive comfort.
What exactly is PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal and metabolic condition that affects approximately 8% to 13% of women of reproductive age in Australia. Despite its name, PCOS isn't just about "cysts" on the ovaries, in fact, those "cysts" are actually small, underdeveloped follicles that haven't been able to release an egg.
From a modern medical standpoint, PCOS is characterised by a hormonal imbalance that can disrupt the communication between your brain and your ovaries. There are generally three main pillars used for diagnosis (often called the Rotterdam Criteria), and you usually need to meet at least two of them:
Irregular or Absent Periods: Indicating that ovulation is not occurring regularly.
Elevated Androgens: Higher levels of male-type hormones (like testosterone) which can be found via a blood test or seen through symptoms like acne or excess hair growth.
Polycystic Ovaries: Seen on an ultrasound as a high number of small follicles on the ovaries.
Common Signs and Symptoms
Because PCOS is a metabolic syndrome, it can affect your body far beyond your reproductive system. At my Clifton Hill clinic, I see many clients navigating:
Weight and Metabolism: Challenges with weight management and insulin resistance (where the body struggles to process sugar).
Skin and Hair: Hormonal acne (especially along the jawline), thinning hair on the head, or unwanted hair growth on the face and body (hirsutism).
Energy and Mood: Significant fatigue, sugar crashes, anxiety, and mood swings.
Fertility: Difficulty conceiving due to irregular or missing ovulation.
Sleep and Digestion: Issues like sleep apnoea or persistent bloating.
It is important to remember that PCOS is a spectrum. You might have all of these symptoms, or only one or two. Whatever your experience, it is a very real condition that requires a grounded, consistent approach to management.
What about "Lean PCOS"?
It is a common misconception that you must be overweight to have PCOS. In reality, around 20–30% of people with PCOS are of a healthy weight or are lean. Lean PCOS can be even more difficult to diagnose, as the typical metabolic signs (like high fasting glucose) might appear normal on standard blood tests. However, underneath the surface, there is often still a level of insulin hypersensitivity or an elevated LH to FSH ratio that disrupts ovulation.
The Chinese Medicine Perspective on PCOS
In Chinese Medicine (CM), we don’t view PCOS as a single disorder, but rather as a collection of imbalances that disrupt the body’s natural flow. Because CM is a holistic medicine, we look at why the communication between your organ systems has become foggy or stagnant, preventing the regular rhythm of your cycle.
Clearing the "Dampness" and "Phlegm"
One of the most common ways we describe the metabolic side of PCOS in TCM is through the concept of Dampness and Phlegm. Think of Dampness as a kind of internal humidity or sluggishness that slows down your metabolic fire. When this Dampness lingers, it can accumulate in the pelvic region, manifesting as the many small, underdeveloped follicles (often described as a pearl appearance) seen on an ultrasound.
To help your body find its rhythm again, we focus on three primary areas:
Supporting the Spleen: In CM, the Spleen governs your transformative fire, how you process nutrients and fluids. If this system is under pressure, it creates the Dampness often linked to insulin resistance and bloating.
Nourishing the Kidney: This system is the root of your reproductive essence (Jing). We focus on balancing Kidney Yin and Yang to encourage healthy ovulation and support hormonal harmony.
Moving Liver Qi: The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of energy and Blood. When stress or hormonal shifts cause this flow to become ‘stuck’ (Qi Stagnation), it can lead to the mood swings and irregular cycles common in PCOS.
A Tailored Framework for Balance
In my Clifton Hill clinic, my goal is to help your body clear the fog. By addressing these underlying imbalances, I am not just looking at your ovaries; I am supporting your entire metabolic and hormonal system.
Whether I are using fertility acupuncture to encourage regular ovulation or Chinese herbal medicine to help resolve Dampness and support your energy, every treatment is entirely individualised. This ancient framework allows me to see the why behind your symptoms, giving me a clear map to help you feel more balanced, energised, and in tune with your cycle.
How Can Acupuncture Support You with PCOS?
Regulating Your Natural Rhythm
The primary goal for PCOS is to encourage the body back into a regular ovulatory rhythm acupuncture may help with that. By supporting the communication between the brain and the ovaries (the HPO axis), we work to move away from the stop-start nature of PCOS cycles. Whether you are looking to regulate your period for general health or are using fertility acupuncture to help conceive, we focus on creating a consistent and predictable cycle.
Metabolic and Hormonal Balance
PCOS is a whole-body metabolic condition. Acupuncture is a powerful tool and may be used for supporting the nervous system and helping to manage the body’s response to stress. By lowering cortisol, the stress hormone that can further disrupt your insulin levels, we create a calmer internal environment. This is essential for managing symptoms like hormonal acne, bloating, and energy crashes.
Integrated Care for Long-Term Health
The beauty of Chinese Medicine is that it works seamlessly alongside your other healthcare choices. Whether you are working with an endocrinologist, a nutritionist/naturopath, or are navigating your journey independently, acupuncture offers a complementary framework. I don’t just look at a blood test; I look at you as a whole person.
What to Expect During Your Treatment
Every PCOS journey is different, which is why your treatment at my Clifton Hill clinic is entirely individualised. I begin with a deep dive into your history, including your metabolic health, skin concerns, and cycle patterns. This is combined with the traditional assessment of your tongue and the palpation of the twelve Chinese pulses on your wrists.
Your tailored management plan may include:
Acupuncture to support hormonal signalling and reduce stress.
Chinese Herbal Medicine to help clear Dampness and nourish your system.
TCM Dietary Energetics to support stable blood sugar and energy.
Lifestyle Guidance to help you manage the daily realities of PCOS.
I love supporting women and people with periods as they regain confidence in their bodies. PCOS can feel like a maze, but you don't have to navigate it alone.
