Bruising
Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for improving skin aesthetics and promoting overall well-being. However, it's important to be aware that bruising may occur as a result of the needling process. Bruising is a possible side effect of acupuncture and typically resolves on its own within a few days to a week. Utmost care is taken to ensure this doesn't occur.
Reasons Why Bruising May Occur:
Low Iron Levels: Iron deficiency anaemia can result in decreased oxygen transport to tissues and impaired wound healing. Low iron levels may predispose individuals to bruising and delayed resolution of bruises.
Thin or sensitive skin: Individuals with thin or sensitive skin may be more prone to bruising due to the delicate nature of their skin tissue.
Needle insertion depth: The depth at which needles are inserted during acupuncture treatment can affect the likelihood of bruising. Deeper needle insertions may increase the risk of bruising compared to shallow insertions.
Skin conditions: Certain skin conditions, such as eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea, may increase the susceptibility to bruising due to underlying inflammation or fragility of the skin.
Medication use: Certain medications, such as blood thinners (anticoagulants) or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may increase the risk of bruising by interfering with blood clotting mechanisms.
Underlying health conditions: Individuals with underlying health conditions affecting blood clotting or skin integrity, such as thrombocytopenia, haemophilia, or thalassemia, may be more prone to bruising.
Alcohol consumption: Consumption of alcohol, particularly in excess, can thin the blood and impair clotting function, increasing the risk of bruising.
Bruise Management:
If bruising occurs following your Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture treatment, you can use the following strategies to help manage and expedite the healing process:
Apply a cold compress or ice pack to the bruised area to reduce swelling and discomfort.
Avoid applying heat to the bruised area, as heat can exacerbate inflammation and prolong bruise resolution.
Arnica gel or cream may help reduce bruising and promote healing when applied topically to the affected area.
Gentle massage of the bruised area may help improve circulation and facilitate the dispersal of pooled blood.
Pre-treatment Recommendations:
To help minimise the risk of bruising after a Cosmetic Facial Acupuncture treatment it is advised to:
Not consume alcohol 24 hours before your treatment.
Stay hydrated before your treatment.
Eat a diet full of iron rich foods or take a supplement if prescribed by your health practitioner.
Disclose any underlying health conditions, skin conditions, or medications that you think might cause you to bruise more.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your practitioner before your treatment or during your treatment.
